ABOUT SOUTHWEST SCOLIOSIS INSTITUTE
To begin with, Richard Hostin, MD, Kathryn Wiesman, MD, and Shyam Kishan, MD comprise the expert spine doctors at the Southwest Scoliosis Institute (SWSI). Above all, the Scoliosis Institute prioritizes diagnosis, treatment, and care for scoliosis, complex spine, and revision surgery.
At our world-renowned spine center, research meets patient care. For example, we actively conduct research to ensure an evidence-based approach exists for all of our patient treatment plans. For instance, we strongly believe in research and that’s why we have our very own research team. As a result, our research brings a wealth of clinical and research expertise to help treat our patients. Above all, our research team conducts investigator-initiated and sponsored research with the goal of sharing scientific evidence for the advancement of spine care internationally. In view of this proactive approach to research, our fellowship-trained and board-certified doctors have a tremendous advantage when it comes to a correct and successful diagnosis and treatment.
To clarify, we always start with a conservative treatment for treating children and adults with scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, and other complex spinal diseases. Because we have the expertise and a long history of focusing on scoliosis and complex spine cases, we can offer a broad range of research-based treatment options, starting with a conservative one.
In addition, we pride ourselves on patient education. In view of this, each patient is given plenty of time with their physician to discuss any symptoms or concerns as the doctors devise the most successful treatment. Finally, our doctors always take the time needed to help our patients understand their condition and explain the best treatment plan available.
Doctor Richard A. Hostin
Hailing from the sunny coast of Southern California where he grew up, Dr. Hostin came to Texas with a desire to “work someplace I would want to go as a patient”. Because his primary focus is on patient care, Dr. Hostin has built the Southwest Scoliosis Institute that focuses on providing optimal care for patients, “allowing us to build a world-class team that includes specialty-trained physicians, researchers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, radiologic technologists, registered nurses, medical assistants, and lots of devoted and caring staff.”
Dr. Shyam Kishan
To demonstrate Dr. Kishan’s expertise, he is board certified In both the U.S. and India. To clarify, he specializes in pediatric orthopedic conditions, including management of early-onset scoliosis (using Mehta casting, Magec growing rods) and other complex spine conditions. In his own words: “I involve my patients and their families in the decision-making of their child’s treatment, carefully tailoring the management of their medical and social needs and constraints. Also, “I believe in an informed patient and family, treating every child as I would my own.”
Dr. Kathryn Wiesman
As one of the top surgeons in the Dallas Metroplex, Dr. Wiesman is a board-certified pediatric orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the management of congenital, developmental, and traumatic orthopedic spine conditions affecting children. Meanwhile, as a graduate of Rice University and the University of Texas Medical Branch, Dr. Wiesman says she “loves working with parents and their families to develop the right treatment plan and finds it very rewarding that families entrust their children to her care.”
“At the Southwest Scoliosis Institute, my doctor spent time with me like I was his only patient. He thoroughly discussed everything about my case. In a day where doctors let their assistants take over their office visits, these doctors are hands-on and very smart.”
