ABOUT SOUTHWEST SCOLIOSIS INSTITUTE
Richard Hostin, MD, Kathryn Wiesman, MD, and Shyam Kishan, MD, are the experts at the Southwest Scoliosis Institute (SWSI). The Scoliosis Institute is designed to specialize in scoliosis, complex spine, and revision surgeries.
Our Institute is where research meets patient care. We actively participate in research to ensure an evidence-based foundation exists for all of our patient treatment plans. We believe in research and we have our very own research team that brings a wealth of clinical and research expertise. Our research team conducts investigator-initiated and sponsored research with the goal of disseminating scientific evidence for the advancement of spine care internationally. This proactive approach to research enables our fellowship-trained and board-certified physicians to have a tremendous lead when it comes to a correct and successful diagnosis and treatment.
We always start with a conservative treatment for treating children and adults with scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, and other complex spinal diseases. Because we have the expertise and a long history of focusing on scoliosis and complex spine cases, we can offer a broad range of research-based treatment options.
We pride ourselves on patient education. Each patient is given plenty of time with their physician to discuss any symptoms or concerns and devise the most successful treatment for your condition. Our physicians always take the time needed to help our patient understand their condition and the best treatment plan available.
Hailing from the sunny coast of Southern California where he grew up, Dr. Richard Hostin came to Texas with a desire to “work someplace I would want to go as a patient.” His primary focus is on patient care, which he believes comes from more than just the surgeon: “Working at a center that focuses on providing optimal care for our patients allows us to build a world-class team that includes specialty trained physicians, researchers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, radiologic technologists, registered nurses, medical assistants, and lots of devoted and caring staff.”
Dr. Shyam Kishan is board certified in both the U.S. and in India. He specializes in a comprehensive array of pediatric orthopedic conditions, including management of early onset scoliosis (using Mehta casting, Magec growing rods) and other complex spine conditions. In his own words: “I involve my patients and their families in the decision-making of their child’s treatment, carefully tailoring the management of their medical and social needs and constraints. I believe in an informed patient and family, treating every child as I would my own.”
Dr. Kathryn Wiesman is a board-certified pediatric orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the management of congenital, developmental, and traumatic orthopedic spine conditions affecting children. A graduate of Rice University and the University of Texas Medical Branch, Dr. Wiesman says she “loves working with parents and their families to develop comprehensive treatment plans and finds it very rewarding that families entrust their children to her care.”
“At the Southwest Scoliosis Institute, my physician spent time with me like I was his only patient. He discussed all information about my diagnosis thoroughly. In a day where physicians let their assistants take over their office visits, these physicians are hands-on and very knowledgeable.”
