Our specialty, Scoliosis Diagnosis, Treatment, and Care, helps a small portion of the 12 million people worldwide who suffer with spine pain. Although many people possess some degree of curvature of the spine, most experience little or no discomfort.
Adult Scoliosis is a curve of the spine. In most patients, no surgery is needed; however, in patients who have an excessive curve and it compromises breathing or walking, surgery can help correct those complications. Adult Scoliosis can vary from a minor problem, where it just needs to be watched, to chronic pain and a severe deformity.
More often than not, children with scoliosis can be treated with a brace, but in cases where patients experience an increase in curvature and are in pain, surgery may be needed. For reasons unknown, girls are more prone to scoliosis in adolescence than boys.
Congenital scoliosis, a spinal deformity, caused by a birth defect, produces a sideways curvature of the spine. For example, the spine may rotate or twist, pulling the ribs along with it to form a curve, often causing a hump.
Approximately 90 percent of scoliosis cases are idiopathic, making it the most common type. The term means that doctors can’t pinpoint the cause of the spinal curvature.
Degenerative scoliosis describes a sideways curvature of the spine that results from the degeneration of the joints and discs in the spine. Also, this condition and the resulting problems of the spine usually occur gradually as a person ages.
FOR Irving TX RESIDENTS
Thoracic scoliosis refers to an abnormal sideways curve located in the middle (or thoracic) portion of the spine. This is the most common location for scoliosis curves, and the first sign many patients notice is an asymmetry of the chest, rib cage, and shoulder blades.

Neuromuscular Scoliosis is a spinal curvature that occurs in children with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and spina bifida. These types of disorders can prevent the spine from being properly supported by the muscles and lead to scoliosis and other abnormal curvatures of the spine.
In addition to treating scoliosis, Southwest Scoliosis Institute specializes in addressing complex spinal conditions and revision surgeries for adults and adolescents who have had unsuccessful treatment in the past and are still in pain.

OF Irving TX
Kyphosis, a spinal disorder, causes a forward curve of the spine that results in a rounding of the upper back. While this spinal defect can occur at any age, it occurs more often in young adults and older women.
While a herniated disc (commonly referred to as a “slipped disc”) can happen anywhere along the spine, most cases occur in the lumbar (lower back) section. It is sometimes referred to as a bulging, or ruptured disc, and it’s one of the most common causes of back pain.
Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which one of the bones of the spine (vertebrae) slips out of place onto the vertebra below it. If it slips too much, the bone might press on a nerve, causing pain. Spondylolisthesis usually affects the bones of the lower back (lumbar spine).
All of our board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons at Southwest Scoliosis Institute are experts in treating complex and challenging spinal conditions, having performed more than 6,000 successful spine surgeries.
